Richard Price and Jane Drinkwater

RICHARD PRICE was born 31 Oct 1819 in Hampton Poyle, Oxfordshire, England, and died 15 Dec 1904 in Branxholme, Victoria, Australia.  He married JANE DRINKWATER 18 Oct 1841 in St Mary the Virgin,  Hampton Poyle, Oxfordshire, England, daughter of WILLIAM DRINKWATER and SARAH BECKLEY.  She was born 1821 in Islip, Oxfordshire, England, and died 02 Aug 1898 in Milltown, Victoria, Australia.


Richard and Jane travelled to Australia on the sailing vessel Oithona. Oithona's tonnage was 851. She took 101 days sailing from England to Australia. Name of ship's Surgeon Superintendent was Lloyd Herbert, the ships master was W Taylor. She sailed with 108 adult male passengers and 133 adult female passengers. There were 41 male children and 62 female children under 14 years old. A total of 344 souls. Number of deaths on the voyage 1 adult male, 3 males under 14 and 3 females under 14, total deaths 7.

Many books and references suggest that Oithona arrived at Portland Bay on the 30th January.  However, on the passenger list the date is shown as 31st January.

Richard Price started lumber mills at Milltown and Hotspur.


 Upon Richard's death this notice appeared in The Hamilton Spectator on 17 December 1904

PRICE -  Richard Price, sen., aged 85 of Milltown, died on 15th December 1904 at the Branxholme residence of his son William.  He arrived in Victoria 45 years ago, living at Digby, Heywood and Milltown, where he was a saw miller.  He was buried at Heywood on 17th December 1904 with his wife, who died several years ago.  He has eight sons and two daughters, most in the district, many grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Upon Jane's death the following notice appeared in The Hamilton Spectator on 6 August 1898.

PRICE - Mrs Richard Price senior aged 75 died of a tumor at Heywood on 2 August 1898 and was buried at Drumborg on 4th August 1898.

To commerate Richard and Jane's arrival in Australia in 1855 their descendants unveiled a plaque on the 7th February 2009 at the Pioneer Immigration wall.
